Whether in court, at the negotiation table, or advising behind the scenes, Michael Varak takes a strategic, measured approach to every case. He positions clients for success by understanding both the law and the landscape.
Michael Varak is a trial-tested litigator who brings clarity, precision, and strategic thinking to complex legal matters throughout Illinois. With nearly two decades of courtroom experience, he has successfully resolved hundreds of cases in both state and federal court. Known for his ability to keep cases progressing efficiently, Mike helps clients overcome procedural and strategic roadblocks with confidence.
“You need a deep understanding of Illinois mortgage foreclosure law, and you must know exactly how to leverage the Code of Civil Procedure to unstick a case and drive it forward,” he explains. At MDK, he focuses on eviction, foreclosure, and related matters, particularly those that fall outside the norm and require a creative, client-focused approach.
Mike’s extensive litigation background is matched by his ability to navigate the courtroom with confidence and control, and his focus on client service truly sets him apart. He describes himself as “goal oriented, not process oriented,” and approaches every case with the intent to find the most direct and effective path to resolution. Mike's style is practical and responsive, rooted in an understanding of what clients need most: clarity, timeliness, and results. “You build trust by delivering those three. That means being timely, thorough, and proactive—giving clients not just answers, but clarity on what comes next,” he says.
But Mike is just as committed to the strategies that happen outside the courtroom. “It’s not all court appearances. There are a lot of soft skills involved. You cross paths with the same opposing counsel often, and building adversarial tension doesn’t help move a case forward,” he explains. He focuses on clear communication, mutual respect, and finding practical solutions that reflect the realities of litigation. “Over time, I’ve developed open lines of communication to find off ramps, ways to resolve matters that consider risk, cost, and time. You have to know when to hold firm.”
In addition to his litigation skills, Mike has handled a wide range of matters, from traditional foreclosure to mechanics liens, title issues, vehicle replevins, mobile home evictions, and eminent domain. His career has spanned large firms, solo practices, and extensive work within the Cook County Mediation Program, a service of the Circuit Court of Cook County that uses a neutral third party to help parties explore settlement options and reach mutually agreeable resolutions.
Outside of the office, Mike is a dad to two energetic children, a watercolor painter, and an avid hiker with his dog. He’s a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and a firm believer in collaboration as a driver of better legal outcomes. “When I’ve got a tricky case, I want to bounce ideas off a good team,” he says. “The best solutions often come from collective insight, and having colleagues I trust allows me to approach challenges with greater clarity and confidence.” For Mike, the best legal work is grounded in preparation, perspective, and strong professional relationships, values he brings to every file, every time.
